Peaceful Catholic Homeschooling / Charlotte Mason, Homeschool, SAHM, Liturgy, Curriculum
You are trying to do something beautiful and hard. You want to raise your children in the Catholic faith, give them a rich and generous education, and somehow hold it all together on the days when nothing goes as planned.
But you are tired of piecing it all together. Tired of filtering Protestant content out of curriculum that was never built for you. Tired of feeling like everyone else has it figured out and you are the only one still searching.
You have found your people.
Peaceful Catholic Homeschooling is the podcast for Catholic moms who are building a Christ centered homeschool using Charlotte Mason principles, the liturgical year, and the grace that comes from a home rooted in faith. Each week I sit with you at the table and talk honestly about what this actually looks like in a real home with real children on a real Monday morning.
I am The Catholic Grandma, a 34 year veteran educator and lifelong Catholic who has been watching Catholic homeschool moms carry too much for too long. This podcast is my answer to that.
Topics include Catholic living books, Charlotte Mason philosophy, liturgical year curriculum, domestic church rhythms, narration, nature study, habit formation, and building a peaceful faithful homeschool from the inside out.

Four Pillars And The Big Question
SPEAKER_00Last episode we talked about the four indispensable subject areas that Charlotte Mason said every mother should study divinity, physiology, mental and moral science, and nature lore. Now you might be thinking, all right, but what do I actually read? Where do I even start? And what books won't feel like homework? What will actually feed my soul this summer? And that's what we are going to talk about in today's episode, because I've curated the perfect start with this book for each of the four areas. The one book that will change how you approach that pillar. And there are so many more books waiting for you, and I am so excited to share all of this with you today. So let's go.
Welcome And Why This Matters
SPEAKER_00Are you a Catholic mom trying to build a homeschool that feels peaceful, faith-filled, and actually doable? But you're exhausted from piecing it all together? Then you're in the right place. Welcome to Peaceful Catholic Homeschooling. I'm a Catholic grandmother, may in my world, lifelong educator and the mother of a homeschool mom. Scripture tells us to stop conforming to the world's way and let God transform us from the inside out. But when it comes to homeschooling, the world's way is often the only map we're handy. I have watched my daughter feel that way, mostly alone with no margin. So, in turn manufacture, I decided to draw a different map. Together we discovered that deep faith, living hooks, and simple rhythms aren't just a different approach. They're the life we were actually needing. This show is for the mom who already knows that in her home and just needs someone to walk beside them. So grab whatever's left of your morning coffee and co-hide in the bathroom if you have to. And let's do this hard and holy work together.
The Reading Basket And Where To Get It

It's a curated collection of books organized by the four indispensable subjects. And in this episode, I'm sharing the Start with This book for each category. Choice Overload And The Right Book
SPEAKER_00Today I want to speak to the overwhelmed that comes with go read good books, because that's what we tell homeschool moms to do, right? Go read living books, feed your mind, read widely. But nobody tells you which books, and then you end up in a library or on Amazon, paralyzed by choices, grabbing whatever looks good, and half the time it doesn't even resonate. Or it's too heavy or it just doesn't fit your needs or your family's needs. And then you feel like you failed again. But here's the truth. You don't need a hundred books. You just need the right books for where you are right now. Books that speak to your soul, books that are written from others, by people who understand. And that's what I'm going to give you today a starting point. The four books that will anchor your summer reading. And then when you're ready to go deeper, there are 23 more waiting for you in our Facebook community. So go find the link in our show notes and make sure you join today.
Divinity: A Mother’s Rule Of Life
SPEAKER_00So the first area that we will talk about today is divinity, which is feeding your faith. The book that I suggest that you start with is called A Mother's Rule of Life by Holly Pierlow, because this book understands that your spiritual life is the foundation. And Holly teaches you how to structure prayer, how to study, and soul care so that your faith isn't something that happens despite of motherhood, it is a part of your motherhood. Now, the point of this area is that your faith isn't academic, it's very personal. And this particular book helps you deepen your relationship with God, not to become a theologian, but to help you live with purpose, to live with peace and intimacy in his presence. A mother who knows God intimately teaches her children what intimacy with God looks like, and that is formation. And that's the real work, isn't it? And there are four or more incredible books in the divinity category waiting for you in our full reading basket. It includes classics, modern spiritual guides, and books specifically for our Catholic mothers.
Physiology: Balanced And Barefoot
SPEAKER_00Now let's move on to area two, which is physiology, understanding how kids and you work. The book I suggest you start with in this area is called Balanced and Barefoot by Angela Hanscom. This book just gets it. She understands the kids' need for movement, sensory input, outdoor time, and play. And when you understand why kids need these things, you stop feeling guilty about letting them play freely instead of constantly structuring their day with more school, more activities, and more optimization. Because when you understand child development, when you know what's normal at each age, what their nervous systems actually need, and why they act the way they do, you become a radically different mother. You stop blaming yourself for what's developmental, you stop forcing compliance, and you start meeting your kids where they actually are, with mercy and with understanding. And they will feel that shift. They will become calmer, more cooperative, and feel more secure because their mother finally gets them. Now there are five more books in the physiology category: books on the whole brain, child, simplicity parenting, connection, and outdoor learning. All waiting for you in our full reading basket guide. Now we'll move on to the third area, mental and moral science.
Education: Mother Culture And Why
SPEAKER_00And this is going to be studying education itself. The book I suggest you start with is called Mother Culture by Karen Andreola. It's the companion to Charlotte Mason's philosophy. Karen translates Charlotte Mason into modern language so you actually understand why you're doing what you're doing. Because when you study education, when you understand the principles behind what you're doing, you become a thinking teacher. You make decisions based on wisdom, not guilt, or trends. And then you see your child's struggles as learning opportunities, not failures. You know why you're using living books instead of textbooks, why narration matters, and why habit training comes before academics. That understanding is everything. Now there are seven more books in this category books on Read Aloud Families, Charlotte Mason Philosophy, The Unhurried Homeschooler, and Becoming a Brave Learner, and more put together specifically for mothers who want to think deeply about education. Now let's move on to our last area, which is nature
Nature Lore: A Pocket Full Of Pine Cones
SPEAKER_00lore. Staying connected to wonder. The book that I suggest you start with is also by Karen Andriola, and it's called A Pocket Full of Pine Cones. This book shows you how to do nature study with your kids without making it another lesson. It's about observation, delight, and wonder. It teaches you to see what's around you and help your children see it too. Your kids' love of nature mirrors your own. When you're curious about the natural world, when you notice the small things, when you read about ecosystems and animal behavior because it interests you, they become curious too. Your wonder becomes their wonder. In a world that's increasingly indoor and digital, the gift of wonder, that connection to creation is so very sacred. Now there are four more books in the nature lore category classic nature books, books on wonder and creation, and frameworks for outdoor learning, waiting for you in our complete reading basket
Pick One Category And Read
SPEAKER_00guide. Now what I want you to do is to pick one category, whether it be divinity, physiology, mental and moral science, or nature lore. Don't try to read all four because you don't want to overwhelm yourself. So just pick one that your soul is hungry for right now. If you're spiritually dry, pick divinity. If you're confused about your kids' behavior, pick physiology. If you feel lost in your approach to homeschooling, pick mental and moral science. If you need to reconnect with beauty and wonder, pick Nature Lore. Once you've picked your start with this book from one of those categories, order it, request it from the library, buy it, use, just grab it however you can. Just get your hands on it. Then this summer you're going to read one real book that feeds your soul. Not for your kids, but for you. One book that makes you think, one book that changes how you see something, one book that reminds you that your mind matters, that your growth matters, and that a mother who is learning is a mother who is alive. And when you're done, I promise you you'll feel different, and your kids will notice it and your home will feel it too. You'll show up as a woman who is awake, engaged, thinking, and growing. And that is the real homeschool. That's the real domestic church.
